County job-hunters can now take advantage of free internet access on a Friday at any of Northamptonshire County Council’s libraries.

The county council is waiving the usual computer hire fee at all of its 36 libraries on Fridays from 3rd April until further notice as part of efforts to support residents during the recession.

The Free e-Fridays will give people looking for work the opportunity to research vacancies and apply online on the day after vacancies are usually published in local newspapers.

Cabinet member for customers and communities, Councillor Andre Gonzalez de Savage said: “As a county council we are working to look at all ways we can support people during these difficult financial times. Libraries already offer a useful service for anyone who is short of money with free book hire as well as being free to just come in and browse through the daily newspapers or magazines.

“The new Free e-Fridays scheme will give people looking for a job the opportunity to access the internet at no charge, making available to them the vast range of websites offering job-hunting advice, vacancies and the chance to apply online.

“Our libraries are a valuable community resource and maximising all opportunities for the good people of our county is of significant importance, please visit your locallibrary for more information and any assistance”

Libraries are also offering Beat the Credit Crunch one-to-one advice sessions to help customers make the most of the money saving information available on the internet.

For more information customers should contact their local library.
