Towcestrians Romp At Home

Towcestrians RFC 1st XV 45Pts vs Old Newtonians RFC 1st XV 12Pts Old Newtonians came to Greens Norton Road with high hopes of a win, only to be dashed by a Towcestrians side which severely punished any mistake made by the visitors, to run up a high score and secure a comfortable win. Playing against a strong wind, both sides seemed evenly matched in the opening exchanges until Matt Yuill broke the deadlock with a weaving run through the Newts defence to score a try and get the score board ticking. After Marc Yeates slotted the conversion, the next score exemplified what was to become the pattern of the game. The Newts pack were storming the Tows line and as the ball spilled from a potentially try scoring position, Aaron Goodman gathered and after he broke away, his kick ahead was collected by David Devlin-Jones who raced three-quarters of the pitch to score under the posts at the opposite end. As Marc Yeates stroked over the conversion, the Newts side looked bewildered. Despite the score-line, the sides looked evenly matched and yet again, after an Old Newtonians mistake, it was Tows winger Ben Lawrence who fielded his own kick ahead to score a further try on the point of half time giving Tows a 19Pts lead. After the interval, although Tows confidence was especially evident in their backs, the confusion caused from over elaborated passing moves created mistakes which allowed the hard working Old Newtonians backs to score a try and get their side back into the game. However, to their credit, Tows responded immediately and it was No8 Chris Kirby who ran from the base of a scrum to score a try, after Tows had secured good ball against the head. Newts were still not finished and although a try from their 2nd row again gave the visitors a life-line, it was the strong running Marc Yeates who broke tackles to score two consecutive tries and take Tows out of sight. With their tails up, the Tows forwards continued to pressure the Old Newts line and after another good forward effort, scrum half Dave stocks shook off the Newts defence to score the final try of the game – for Tows, with 4 Colts players, to secure a couple of comfortable league points. On Tuesday evening 24th March, Tows Lewis Shield side take on Daventry. Kick Off: 7.30pm Next week – Towcestrians are on League duties AWAY at BBOB. Kick Off: 3.00pm.
